About us

Who we are

The 1885 Singers was founded by Alison Hunka in 1997. We are a community based, un-auditioned choir open to everyone. We have established ourselves in the music scene of South West London. Typically, we perform four concerts a year, usually in March, June, October and December. We rehearse for 8 or 9 weeks before our concerts, with rehearsals held on Monday evenings in All Saints Church, Putney Common.

Chris Langworthy

Chris Langworthy is the Musical Director of The 1885 Singers.

Born and raised in Mid Wales, Chris read Music at the University of Manchester before beginning his career in music education. He is a pianist, singer, conductor, composer, arranger and (occasionally) a bassoonist. In 2015, he was awarded the Accompanist Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Chris is baritone of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) 2015 Quartet Champions, Tagline. Tagline have sung in America, Canada and across the UK. They have recorded an album, an EP, radio adverts and e-greetings cards, and have appeared several times on ITV2. In 2018, Tagline achieved 2ndplace in the world in the International Youth Quartet competition, the highest ever placing for a British quartet.

Chris is also a barbershop arranger and coach, and has worked with ensembles including Limelight (2022 BABS Quartet Champions), The Breakfast Club (2023 International Youth Quartet Bronze Medallists), Hot Ticket (2023 British Mixed Quartet Champions) and The Emerald Guard (2013 BABS Quartet Champions).

Chris is currently Director of Music at a school in London. He is absolutely thrilled to have been offered the post of Musical Director of The 1885 Singers, and is honoured to continue the work of previous Musical Director Alison Hunka.
